Keyword
Forensics versus the Traditional Keyword Research
In the 14th of July 2006 edition of the eMarketing
Talk Show, Cindy Turrietta and Brooke Schumacher
interviewed John Alexander of Search Engine Workshops.
John discussed keyword forensics and how to use
Wordtracker
to the best of your ability. Cindy informed listeners
that John Alexander along with Robin Noble form
the dynamic duo that teach people about search
engine optimization at the Search
Engine Workshops. Cindy not only took their
online training course but also attended their
workshop in Las Vegas which she described as being
“excellent”. John advised listeners
to allow Wordtracker to become their “window
on the world of search behavior” and
to “get rid of the keyword hunt”
mindset and explore “the human condition
of their audience of searchers”.
John went on to explain that Wordtracker has
built in tools that are pretty phenomenal such
as the thesaurus and the lateral thinking tool
that helps come up with additional words. John
advised people to think of behaviorally related
words i.e. action words and narrow it down to
a single root word rather than a keyword phrase.
Wordtracker would then show how that single word
is being used in literally hundreds of phase clusters.
John also advised listeners about the different
features offered by Wordtracker such as:
• When you click on keyword universe you
have two screens. Enter a keyword on the left
hand side and Wordtracker queries 200 web pages
and pulls out all kinds of additional words related
to the keyword you entered. These results are
the Wordtracker behavioral data and when this
data comes up you will notice that at the top
of the list there is a fine white print. Click
on this print and Wordtracker will dump all the
words into your basket and will get rid of duplicates.
However, this can only be done in keyword universe.
• The “comprehensive search feature”
uses very powerful right and left hand word stemming.
When you enter a word you are asking Wordtracker
to show you exactly how that word is being used
within multiple phrases. The results are sorted
by keyword effectiveness and then you can tap
into the very best windows of opportunity based
on that KEI value and ultimately you discover
all kinds of excellent keyword phrases.
• Wordtracker says that a KEI value of 100
indicates a good keyword phrase and a KEI value
of 400 indicates an excellent keyword phrase.
Johns assured listeners that by using the tips
he teaches they can find KEI values in the thousands,
tens of thousands and sometimes in the low hundreds
of thousands. KEI values help find busy keyword
phrases that attract genuine searches and have
low competition so that one doesn’t have
to compete with millions of pages.
Lateral Thinking Using Powerful Root Words
In the second segment John talked about lateral
thinking and using powerful root words. He gave
listeners an example of how a realtor can make
use of a phrase like “cost of living comparisons
by city” by advising them to start by using
the comprehensive search tool. Instead of entering
a common term like “home listings”
or “MLS” he instructed listeners to
enter a single root word like “list”.
The results that came up in this case showed that
“Michigan Real Estate Listing” had
a KEI of 552, with 559 searches in the last 90
days and only 628 competing pages. Higher up on
the list “Residential Listing in Long Island”
had a KEI of 955, 391 searches and only 16 competing
pages. John advised listeners to use Acronym
Finder to decipher acronyms because when some
funny terms pop up in Wordtracker they could be
important. For example, SEOs think that “SEO”
only stands for search engine optimization whereas
it also stands for Senior Executive Officer and
South Eastern Ohio etc.
John instructed listeners to look for keyword
phrases that make sense, are easy to use within
the body text, have a high KEI with low competition
and then begin to optimize for these phrases first.
Wordtracker will show which phrase will deliver
more volume and more traffic for example when
you put in a word like chocolate, Wordtracker
will show that words like “candy”
get more searches than chocolate. So one would
rather optimize for candy than chocolate SINCE
chocolate is a form of candy!
The Power of Wordtracker Forensics - Working
With Your Customer's Dialogue
When he talks about forensics, John is referring
to using science and technology to get to the
facts. So he explores individual keywords within
ordinary terms that open up Wordtracker data to
reveal the trends that are going on behind the
scenes because people are getting smarter and
smarter about they way they search. Cindy pointed
out that Wordtracker is not the only place where
you can find keyword phrases that people are using
to get to your website. Server logs or analytics
are also valuable resources you can use to see
how people are finding you today and you can expand
on the terms they are using.
John emphasized that quality content is more
important than ever before and urged listeners
to create something that deserves to be found
in the top ranks. He also agreed with Brooke on
the idea of Latent Symantic Indexing (LSI) and
said the words around a keyword phrase have a
phenomenal influence on SEO. John also informed
listeners about the SEO courses and mentoring
available at the Workshop Resource Center and
was proud to share that Robin Nobles had created
the very first online training program to be recognized
by the United States educational system allowing
them to offer continuing education units that
help students complete their studies. Brooke brought
the show to an end by encouraging listeners to
visit http://www.SearchEngineWorkshops.com
and make use of the resources available there.
